Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, better known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, was born in Trinidad and currently resides in the US. She was born on December 8, 1982. She is well known for her eclectic taste in music, rhyming style, alter egos, and accents. Her music complemented her powerful persona, which included provocative clothing and flamboyant wigs.

Early Life & Education

On December 8, 1982, Nicki Minaj was born in Trinidad and Tobago’s Saint James neighborhood of Port of Spain. Her father was Robert Maraj, a financial executive who occasionally sang gospel music. Her mother, Carol Maraj, is also an Afro-Trinidadian gospel singer. Carol worked in the accounting and payroll departments when Minaj was a young woman. Later, she moved to the Bronx in New York City to attend Monroe College after leaving Minaj and Jelani in Trinidad with their grandmother. Carol relocated Minaj and Jelani into her home on 147th Street in South Jamaica, Queens, with her and their father when Minaj was five years old. The performing and visual arts-focused Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art welcomed Minaj after she aced her audition.


Music Career

Minaj began her career in New York City as a backup singer for upcoming rap acts. Her Myspace profile, which included videos of her work, was seen by a nearby record label. Eventually, rapper Lil Wayne learned about Minaj, and the two worked together on a few mixtapes; the first of these, Playtime Is Over, was released in 2007.
