NEWS JUST IN: Oyo Mesi chooses a new Alaafin and awaits Makinde’s approval

The new Alaafin of Oyo has been chosen by traditional kingmakers in Oyo town, known as Oyo Mesi, and is awaiting the governor of Oyo state, Seyi Makinde

The Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, reportedly revealed this in an exclusive interview with PUNCH

Additionally, a document that has not been verified said that a new Alaafin was chosen some time in October 2022

The governor of Seyi Makinde, according to the traditional kingmakers (Oyo Mesi), had been supplied the name of the proposed prince but had not yet made public the kingmakers’ decision

The Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration, which governs the election of new Alaafin, states that the government may receive a petition objecting to the election within 21 days. Only an aspirant or the ruling may submit such a petition,The selection was finished and informed to the government over a year ago

Chief Yusuf Akinade, the Basorun of Oyo, stated that the selection process was complete and that they were awaiting a formal announcement from the state government when he was approached

The Basorun said in the interview, “We finished the process of choosing the next Alaafin on October 4, 2022, and we promptly informed the state administration of our decision. We didn’t get any petitions challenging our choice, as required by local law, but we did face a lawsuit

“We hired our own attorney, and we won the case. The court dismissed the case and ruled that Oyo Mesi’s initial judgment was correct. Since that time, we have been waiting for the governor to announce his decision, but he hasn’t done so. We’ll keep watching for him to accomplish it

Dotun Oyelade, the state’s commissioner for information, said that the governor had been told of the Oyo Mesi’s judgment but that he was taking his time”

The Oyo Mesi has absolute authority to carry out its duties,” he said. “However, the statute permits His Excellency to take a look in his capacity as the final authority on the matter, as provided for by the law, to take a canal look and make sure that no misdemeanor or mistake will lead to subsequent embarrassment or litigation, as we had with the former Eleruwa of Eruwa”

In response to a question on the court’s approval of the Oyo Mesi’s pick of the Alaafin, he stated, “As for the legal element of it, we will follow the due process without breaking the law.
