Lionel Messi called it a “shame” that he was unable to participate in Sunday’s Inter Miami preseason friendly in Hong Kong. Fans were incensed by his absence and demanded a reimbursement.

Many local fans had come in large numbers expecting to witness the eight-time Ballon D’Or winner in action, but Messi, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, was benched as his team defeated a Hong Kong XI 4-1.

A post-match address by Inter co-owner David Beckham was heckled by fans, who also demanded their money back. Later, the Hong Kong government voiced its “deep disappointment” over Messi’s injury and the organizers’ “failing to provide a detailed explanation promptly.”

Since then, Beckham’s MLS team has traveled to Japan, where they will play Vissel Kobe on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Argentina’s star player, Messi, practiced.

Following Argentina’s decision to skip the Inter Miami friendly in Hong Kong, fans jeer David Beckham and Lionel Messi.
During a press conference shown on Sky Sports, the World Cup winner stated, “Unfortunately, injuries can occur in any football game. I experienced it.

“I couldn’t play in the Hong Kong match, and it was a shame because I always wanted to participate, I wanted to be there and even more so when it came to these matches.

“When we travelled so far and people were so excited to see our matches. I hope we can return and we play another game and I can play as I do whenever I can. But the truth is that it is a game that I was not able to participate.”
