FLASH: Two People Are Killed As Customs Officials Pursue Smugglers in Oyo

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) officers and suspected smugglers were both involved in a traffic collision that claimed the lives of no less than two people

According to information obtained by The Nation, the event happened on Thursday in Oyo State along the Iseyin-Ibadan road

According to sources, an accident occurred as the customs officials were pursuing some individuals believed to be smugglers, which resulted in the deaths of an unidentified local and a customs officer

Several Customs officials and other accident victims had varying degrees of injury, and as of the time this story was filed, they were still being treated in hospitals

One of the witnesses, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that the wreckage of the car used to chase the suspects had been transported to Iseyin

When reached, NCS, Oyo and Osun Command’s public relations officer, Kayode Wey, claimed he was unaware of the occurrence

Theophilus Duniya, the public relations officer for the Federal Operating Unit (FOU) Zone A of NCS, confirmed the tragedy but claimed it was a single accident

According to Duniya, no one was being chased by the Customs agents at the time of the event

He insisted that the mishap only resulted in the death of one customs officer
